Defensive Bidding to Strong One Club Openings (Precision etc)

Many conventions have been invented for this situation. It is only worth learning one if the Bridge environment you play in contains one or more Precision players. This is one of them.

Based on the assumption that you are rarely ever going to bid game after a Strong 1 Club opening, this Convention, which I believe was invented by the American Alan Truscott, enables you to :

a) a fit.

b) a weak hand at a relatively safe low level.

c) Occasionaly mess up the oppositions bidding.

There is no definite point requirement 0-16 but common sense must be used, particularly in relation to the vulnerability.

In second seat after a 1 Club opening
Bids at the one level and 2 ♣ show Two-Suited hands of the suit bid and the one above.

Odd suits are catered for by Double and 1NT.

Bids from 2 upwards show one suited hands.

After 1 ♣ is opened:

Double shows Clubs and Hearts

1 shows Diamonds and Hearts.

1 shows Hearts and Spades

1 ♠ shows Spades and Clubs

1NT shows Spades and Diamonds

2 ♣ shows Clubs and Diamonds.

2 // ♠show 5+ with compensating points for being at the two level and prevailing vulnerability.

With a hand that is not catered for Pass and then bid later if possible when all bids are Natural.

After 1 ♣ from RHO, Pass from you , 1 from LHO , 1 from RHO, now 1 ♠ would show 5+ Spades and not good enough to have bid 2 ♠ in the first place.

In Fourth seat after a 1 Club opening, Partner passes LHO bids 1 Diamond (negative)
Bids at the one level, 2 ♣ and 2 show Two-Suited hands of the suit bid and the one above.

Odd suits are catered for by Double and 1NT.

Bids from 2 upwards show one suited hands.

After 1 ♣ is opened: and LHO bids 1

Double shows Diamonds and Spades

1 shows Hearts and Spades.

1 ♠ shows Spades and Clubs

1 ♠ shows Spades and Clubs

1NT shows Clubs and Hearts

2 ♣ shows Clubs and Diamonds.

2 shows Diamonds and Hearts

The easy way to remember both set of bids is simply - a suit shows that suit and the one above , Double shows the suit bid ( ie Clubs in Second seat, Diamonds in Fourth) and the non-touching suit and 1NT shows the suits not covered by the Double

Because Precision style bids are not that common nowadays, particularly at Club level, I think this is a fairly easy little system to remember- Just get Double and 1NT firmly fixed in your mind the rest come quite easily.
